Dolomites

The Dolomites offer an environment and surroundings like no other.

Quicklinks

The jagged rock of the mountains make them instantly recognisable and the views you get from up there in the summer months are simply wonderful. Lots of people go cycling in the Italian Dolomites each year because of the unique cycling experience it offers. It might be tough and it might be challenging, but there’s nothing dull about spending a summer cycling in the Italian Dolomites.

Popular Cycling Routes

There are so many routes spread out across the Italian Dolomites, and many of them are among the most challenging climbs in Europe. You might not want to choose this destination if you prefer flat road cycling because there’s not much of that. But if you want to embrace the climb, here are the routes to consider.

Passo Campolongo

One of the reasons many people go cycling in the Italian Dolomites is so they can get the chance to climb the Passo Campolongo. It’s the first climb of the Maratona dles Dolomites and that’s what many know it for. It’s a tough climb with beautiful natural landscapes surrounding it.

Passo di Falzarego

This high mountain pass is found in Belluno. Its endless curves can make it a tough and risky route to cycle, so it might not be for newcomers. But if you’ve cycled a lot in the Dolomites and you want to test yourself, Passo di Falzarego is not to be ignored. It’s another climb, which is what you’ll have to get used to if you want to cycle in the Dolomites.

Passo Valparola

Not far from Passo di Falzarego, you’ll come across Passo Valparola just to the west. At over 7000 feet tall, it’s very high up and presents a real challenge. It’s not quite as difficult to cycle as the Passo di Falzarego, but there’s enough here to push you hard. It’s the final climb in the Maratona dles Dolomites race.

Cycling & The Italian Dolomites

There are a few reasons why cycling is so popular in the Italian Dolomites and why this part of the world is so linked to cycling in general. It’s important to recognise the fact that the Dolomites offer some of the best climbs anywhere in Europe, so people who like going uphill are drawn to these routes. Maratona dles Dolomites is one of the cycling races that’s also associated with the Italian Dolomites. It’s a huge competition for touring cyclists and many people enjoy it each year.

When to Cycle in The Italian Dolomites

Choosing the right time to visit the Italian Dolomites is very important because the time of your visit will impact how enjoyable your cycling experience is. The weather in the Dolomites is very good between the months of May and October, so you’ll probably want to visit some time around then. Most people simply head there in the summer but if you’re looking for a quieter time, you could visit in September or October as the season is reaching its end. If you want to avoid the heat, June and July are the hottest months of the year.
