Skedaddle's first ever road cycling tour took place in Northern Spain. The quality of the cycling here still makes the area unmissible. The region has everything - spectacular climbs, thrilling descents and sensational scenery and it's easy to see why it is high on many of your holiday wish lists!
During the tour we take in three of Spain’s most beautiful and unspoiled wilderness regions; the Somiedo (a UNESCO world heritage site), Fuentes Carriones and the awesome and spectacular Picos de Europa National Park. Beautiful architecture of local timber and stone create compact villages, surrounded by age-old naturally fertilised meadows reaching to majestic mountain-tops.
It is towards those mountain-tops that we will be heading during our cycling on routes which will challenge even the most seasoned cyclist. Our route takes in a number of Vuelta a España classics including the Pajares Pass; a beautiful traverse through the Somiedo, an ascent to the Lagos de Covadonga and the fearsome and infamous Alto de El Angliru. Moving on we begin a loop of the Picos National Park. Following a route around the lakes of the Fuentes Carriones we descend 1,100m from Piedrasluengas into the lively market town of Potes.
Dragging ourselves away from the the fiesta atmosphere in the valley we begin our assault on Northern Spain and the Ruta de las Quatro Puertas (the route of four passes). It’s a classic day of alpine style passes, amazing vistas and an exhilarating descent of over 40km through the incredible Beyos gorge.
We end our journey in style with an unforgettable ride over the Sierra de Cuera and a finale along the majestic Cantabrian coast to our final destination, the beautiful fishing town of Ribedasella for seafood and cider!
